The roofing industry continues to grow in relation to the booming new home industry in Canada and the United States with millions of homes and housing projects being commenced every year. Employment within the roofing industry either for new build projects or for damage replacement or timed obsolesces of roofing materials remains steady.

One of the key tools for a roofer is the ladder. A specialty designed ladder engineered for roof climbing and safety. You can often see them strapped down or chained to a roof while the shingles are being replaced and you might even wonder what it’s there for. After all, if the construction worker is already on the roof why would he need a ladder?

How To Use A Roof Ladder

A roof ladder is used in a variety of ways. First, it is used to stabilize a roofer to prevent a fall. Assume for a moment that the roof can get slippery, particularly in hot temperatures. Should the construction worker begin to slip, a nearby roof ladder would be able to be grasped to prevent his fall. They are an excellent safety asset.

In addition there are roofs that are peaked or multilevel (particularly in larger homes and buildings). While the roofer has scaled the first height of the roof he or she may be required to climb up an additional level. The roof ladder is helpful at helping the worker ascend in a safe manner. And while it looks just the same as any other kind of ladder, you can tell its unique purpose by the presence of “hooks” at one end of the ladder. Those hooks are designed to clasp on to specific angles of the peak of the roof structure to help stabilize the ladder from movement where it is not possible to secure it in another manner (i.e., with ropes or counter weight).

Two Types

There are two types of roof ladders. The type with fixed hooks (or installed hooks) and the type with retractable hooks. Neither design is better than the other and both styles have clear benefits and disadvantages for usage. However the retractable hook style of the roof ladder is easier to collapse and store which presents an advantage for a contractor in terms of transporting the tool to different jobs.

Fixed hooks tend to be the industry standard as there is a belief that a fixed hook presents with more durability and stability than a collapsible hook and many roof workers and climbers prefer the fixed hook design.

Safety Features and Requirements

Every country has its own safety standards for construction equipment. In the United States more than 532,000 individuals were treated for injuries sustained from climbing a ladder. While this statistic does not bear into mind whether the injuries were commercial or residential (private use) it is clear that safety is an issue with the use of any ladder and where human life is concerned.

Ladders for commercial purposes are required to be inspected on a regular basis for issues in engineering such as cracks or failing joints or any other issues that would compromise its safe use on the work site. Few people (private or commercial) will purchase a ladder used for this reason as the risks of having a ladder which lacks structural integrity are far too high. It is best to purchase a new ladder wherever possible and ensure that it meets with all safety requirements and governance guidelines for the State.

Roof Ladder Alternatives

While utilizing a roof ladder is ideal for preventing falls and stabilizing roof top workers, it is not a completely safe method of reaching new plateaus or elevations in the roof. For a more complicated job where free climbing might be difficult (with or without the use of a roof ladder) most contractors and engineers prefer to use a telescopic urban crane. These small “mini cranes” are equipped with what is called a “cherry picker” or small enclosed basket that can carry 1-3 workers in an upright position to a new height or work level on the site. Instead of relying on ladders and ropes and the perils of waling and attempting to climb a peaked roof, many workers and employers alike prefer the use of a telescopic mini crane as it is far safer and faster to relocate workers in this method. Mini cranes also take up little space on street level and do not present with as many risks as free climbing.

Depending on the location of the roof, individuals may choose to use another method of cooperative climbing assisted by a crane. The crane can provide stability for climbers to rope climb while safety harnesses are attached to the crane. This is a safe and cost effective method of climbing for roofing workers reducing the risk of falls or injury on the job site. Additionally more than one worker can be secured to a telescopic crane arm to provide safe support and tethering.

Purchasing A Roof Ladder

A wholesale supplier of construction equipment would not likely have roofing ladders in stock. It’s not the kind of product that gets sold every day and it is a special item order. Typically they are available for custom ordering from hardware stores or equipment suppliers and you can browse the catalog for a variety of options and have it delivered to your local store. It is recommended that before purchasing a roof ladder however from a catalog that a floor sample be viewed to make sure it is precisely the right size and design for your specific commercial job. A critical factor is to ensure that the type of roof ladder you order is appropriate for the weight load restriction guidelines. A light weight roof ladder will not be able to hold a heavy employee in a safe manner and the value of purchasing a good roof ladder is equivalent to the value of the human life that it will hold.

You choose a permanent ladder that stays on the roof or a portable version that can be moved on and off the roof as needed. There are many advantages to using this type of ladder, with safety being the most important benefit.

The Basics

A roof ladder is used on the roof because it has been specifically designed to hook onto the peak of the roof. This will prevent slipping while working on the roof, or while inspecting the roof for damage. Your ladder may have hooks that latch over the peak of the roof for a strong hold that can support your weight as you work. This type of ladder is very similar to other styles of ladders, however. The main difference is the hooks at the top of the ladder that make it perfect for working in high places.

Steep roofs can be very dangerous to work on without a roof ladder. You can find these ladders at any local hardware store, or if you are having trouble finding one locally you can buy one inexpensively online. There are some basic safety tips that you need to consider anytime you are working on the roof, whether you are using a roof ladder or not. It is highly recommended that you don’t try to substitute any other type of ladder for this hook styled ladder when working on a roof, since the ladder without hooks can easily slip and cause you to fall.

Safety Tips

When working with a roof ladder there are some basic safety tips that you need to follow. One of the most important things that you can do to promote safety is to use your roof ladders as recommended and stay off of wet, snowy or icy roofs. When you seem to have roof damage from a winter storm the best thing that you can do is ask a professional for assistance. Snow and ice are particularly dangerous when working on a roof especially if you have permanent roof ladders installed. These ladders can quickly become coated with rain, ice or snow and you may slip on one of the rungs of the ladder as you search for damage.

You may also want to consider using a roof harness along with your roof ladder hook if you aren’t comfortable in high places. Having anxiety or begin nervous about working on the roof may interfere with your ability to remain steady as you work. Once you become more comfortable with working on the roof in dry weather you may decide that the ladder provides enough of a safety net for you to use as you work. Some other basics of safety include the following:

If you drop something from your roof ladder, just let it slide off the roof instead of trying to grab it. Steep roofs are particularly dangerous to work on, and if you try to grab a tool you may slide down the roof yourself.

Check the stability of your ladders occasionally to ensure they are in proper working order. Wooden ladders are susceptible to rot when left on the roof permanently, while metal ladders may rust if left uncovered for extended periods of time.

If you are working with tools such as shingles and hammers make sure you are wearing a lightweight tool belt to keep everything organized and easy to reach. This will minimize the amount of walking you need to do on the roof.

Safety is an important consideration when working on the roof of your home. Roof ladders do make it much safer but being cautious can also help you keep your footing.

Using Your Ladder

A roof ladder is pretty simple to use. You can measure or estimate the length of your roof to find a ladder that will reach from the peak of the home to the overhang. The right length will allow you to work on the roof anywhere while making the job much safer. You can choose to have several ladders installed on your roof, as well. Instead of having just one ladder the permanent ladders will create a network that you can use to navigate over the entire area of the roof.

A permanent roof ladder will be made of high grade metals rather than wood. Stainless steel and aluminum are both options that you can choose from when finding the right ladders for your personal needs. These metals can withstand the elements nicely and will last for many years to come even when left on the roof throughout the seasons. If you want to protect your ladders you may wrap them in plastic sheeting or store them in a shed or garage during the rainy and snowy seasons of the year.

If you do decide to leave the ladder on the roof then you will want to check its stability before you use it again. Occasionally rain and snow will cause the ladder to become slippery even when it is dry outside. You can wash your ladder with a pressure washer anytime you notice a buildup on the rungs.

Buying Ladders

Buying a roof ladder is fairly inexpensive. You can find these ladders online for less than $200 and up. The ladder that you choose can be made from high grade materials and can be found in many different lengths. The length and the materials that you choose for your ladder will determine the cost. You may also find hooks that attach to the end of a regular ladder. In general it is much safer to use pre-made roof ladders rather than trying to make one yourself.

Roof ladders are a safe alternative to working on the roof with a harness or without any kind of protection. There are many benefits to using a roof ladder made specifically for working on the roof, with safety and convenience being the biggest advantages.

While most people know the importance of proper equipment while working on a roof, they often don’t know much information about roof hooks. These hooks are attached to ladders that are on being used to access your home roof. They are essential for anyone who is going to be working on a roof.

People who have worked on a roof know that the possibility of falling is very real. It is important for you to focus on using the right equipment to reduce the any risks that are available. People who use these roof hooks on a regular basis are less likely to suffer from a falling accident.

These ladders work by being specially designed to help prevent you from falling if you are accessing a steep roof. The ladder is made to be hooked on to your roof to allow you to climb up and down your roof without worrying about falling off.

A first glance you might end up being surprised with how light these ladders really are. Because the ladders are not suspending in the air, the roof of your home is able to fully support the entire length of the ladder. This is why you should only use the roof ladders on your roof and never as a free standing ladder. They are simply not built to hold the free weight.

The main component of the roof hook ladder is the metal hooks that are at the top of the ladder. These are hooks are built extremely sturdy and are used to help stabilize the ladder when it is on the roof. The ladders can be used as a walk way to access different parts of your roof or you can also use it to store supplies when working on a roof.

If you are going to be using a roof hook ladder always ensure that you keep everything properly maintained. You don’t want to be walking on the roof ladder and slip because there is mud or grass that has begun to build up. The ladder can become slippery if it is raining and there is a build up of materials.

The basic roof ladder is basically an extension ladder that is equipped with security that is built in to allow you to work on the roof. Most normal extension ladders will require you to lean on the wall and will usually be squared off. These roof ladders are built to extend past the roof. For added security they roof ladders will usually have a hook or grip that is at the top end to provide some safety.

If you are working on a pitched roof, you should make sure that you use this type of ladder. The ladder is designed to have wheels on the top end of the latter so it can be pushed up the roof without actually causing damage to any of the slates or tiles. If you look on the other side of the wheels, the roofing ladders are formed into a hook so it can fit into the top ridge of the roof. This will prevent it from slipping down.

The job that you do will determine what kind of ladder you will use. You need to make sure that you find a ladder that can work for you specifically. There are different ladders that are designed for various projects that you can do. If you are working on your roof then you will need to use a ladder that will work for you.

People often don’t realize the amount of injuries that can occur if they don’t take the proper precautions and steps to ensure that their ladder is in working order. You always need to make sure that you inspect the ladder and make sure that it can work for you.

Anyone who is looking to purchase roof ladders needs to do a comprehensive search online for different ladders available. There are many different brands of ladders that are available so it is important to find one that is reliable. When it comes to roofing you need to make sure that you have the right equipment to ensure everything is working properly.

One of the specific benefits that these ladders offer is the hooks at the end of them. The hooks give stabilization and balance to the ladder when it is attached over the roof. Because normal ladders don’t actually have the hooks at the end of them, they can often slip when you are at a certain point. Finding the right ladder will ensure that you decrease the amount of risk that you experience when you are on the ladder.

There are many different options that are available when it comes to finding the right ladder for you. In order to get the right ladder, you need to find something that you are comfortable. People who have never used a ladder before should not try using a roofing ladder. No matter what kind of ladder you are using, you need to have confidence and balance in order to properly perform on the ladder. If you don’t have any confidence there is a good chance that you can slip and fall off the ladder.

People who don’t feel comfortable on ladders should hire a professional to do the job. Hiring someone to do the job will ensure that you don’t suffer any injuries from falling while you are on the ladder. People don’t realize that there are thousands of accidents that occur on ladders. Because of the nature of ladders, it is important to make sure that they are properly based and grounded.

There are many different things that you can do to ensure that you don’t have your ladder fall over while you are on it. Roofing ladders are excellent for people who are looking for a safe way to gain access to their roof. Remember that you need to be physically capable of using a ladder. No matter how good the ladder is, if you don’t have a good sense of balance and confidence, you shouldn’t attempt to use the ladder. A good search online will ensure that you find something that you are looking for.
